We the people of
St. Marys Catholic Community, young and old, married and
single, are bound together through Baptism, to be the living Jesus in
our world today. We are strengthened by and through the Liturgies of
the Word and the Eucharist to be an open and genuinely caring
community in service to the parish, and local and world communities.
Within the St. Marys community we are supported and challenged
to grow together and within ourselves, and to share our gifts as
Jesus commands us to do.
We invite you to share in our parish
facilities, but more importantly the activities and sense of
Christian community which are the essence of our parish
life.
The old St. Mary mission church was founded by William Welch family in 1860. The family had moved from Illinois to Pella in 1843. At this time there were few settlers in Pella. It was not until four years later that the great settlement from Holland arrived. St. Mary's remained a missionary church until December 1, 1976 when Father S. E. Susic was appointed as pastor. The plans for building a new St. Mary's church began in the fall of 1976 and construction was completed in January, 1978. Dedication of the new church was held on April 3, 1978, marking the replacement of the 118 year old mission church and contributing to the rebirth of the parish. The present parish consists of over 200 families and over 250 Central College students.
